Who We Are

SafeSpaces (Family Mental Health Service) FMHS CIC is a community-focused organisation supporting the emotional wellbeing and mental health of children, young people, and families, particularly within Black African, Caribbean and Black British communities.

We aim to create safe, inclusive, and culturally informed spaces where young people aged 8–18 years feel heard, supported, and empowered.

Through workshops, webinars, advocacy, and community engagement, we work to reduce stigma surrounding mental health while helping families better understand emotional wellbeing.

Vision Statement

Our Story

SafeSpaces FMHS CIC was created in response to the growing need for culturally informed mental health support within Black African, Caribbean and Black British communities.

Through both personal and professional experiences, the SafeSpaces team recognised that many young people were struggling silently with emotional wellbeing, anxiety, identity pressures, and behavioural challenges; often without safe spaces to openly discuss these experiences.

Conversations around mental health can still carry stigma within many communities, leaving parents and young people unsure where to seek support or understanding.

SafeSpaces was created to help bridge this gap by creating supportive environments where children, young people, and families can access education, wellbeing support, and open conversations without judgement.

The organisation was founded by Dr Akosua Ofosu-Asiedu, whose experiences working with children, young people, and families within healthcare highlighted the importance of early intervention, culturally sensitive support, and community-based wellbeing initiatives. Together with a wider team of professionals and community advocates, SafeSpaces continues to grow as a collaborative and community-led organisation.

Today, SafeSpaces delivers online wellbeing workshops, community events, mental health education, and partnership initiatives focused on empowering young people aged 8 – 18 years and supporting families across underserved communities.
